I don't know of any 2-piece _rudders_ (other than the wooden ones), but, 
as Michael mentioned the rudder _stock_ is 2-piece. The Whitby drawings 
that Michael contributed are on

Michael has just contributed some photos of construction details of his 
rudder, also.

These show that the pins through the upper rudderstock are actually 
machine screws on Checkmate.

BTW, many people dig a hole to drop the rudder rather than lift the boat.
