[Public-List] Zincs for Lakes

So, along these lines, do I really need a zinc on my prop shaft for fresh water?? I have a magnesium on my rudder but nothing on my new shaft.

I also learned a lesson many years ago after occasionally finding relatively new zincs gone including the screw and lock washer only a few months after installation. Once when the yard manager sold me a new zinc he advised me "seat" it with a light hammer hit before attaching the screw and lock washer. As he pointed out most of these zincs have little casting imperfections (flashing?) on the inside where they seat with the bronze male nut. As these thin ridges of zinc quickly wear away the zinc becomes loose on the prop nut and the lock washer becomes useless.
I have not lost one since following his advice.

Thanks!? Mike Lehman mentioned the end of shaft? solution to me after he saw that my zinc had disappeared yet again when I had my boat hauled to work on the mast wiring a few weeks ago.? I've never heard of it, and then saw this thread.? I may have to give it a go!

I had this problem last haulout. The threads on the bronze prop
zinc holder of the CMPN-B prop zinc had worn out after only 15
years. Replacing it turned out to be fairly easy with the right
tools: a length of 2x4 to wedged between the prop and the hull to
keep the prop from turning and a BIG wrench to turn the prop nut
holder. Luckily, I'm on good terms with the people in the yard
and they volunteered to lend me the 30-inch wrench. Out of the
water with someone else holding the 2x4, it took all of 5
minutes. In the water would be trickier.
I use locktite blue to keep the screw in.
