Hello friends...

When considering paints, don’t forget that so-called ‘rust paints’ are in reality lower grade marine enamels. Whatever they will do with regard to rust protection, adhesion, coverages, elasticity, etc, marine enamel will do better.

    Thank you Mike.

Fully agree with you regarding the prep work. Its a lot. In doing the
v-berth, I tried sanding with 80 grit on a 1/4 sheet Ridgid sander. The
previous paint, Kilz, would accumulate fairly rapidly in the sandpaper, as
if it was softening and "flowing" rather than resisting and turning to
dust. Mind there was plenty of dust, and plenty of build-up. Thank God
for the shop-vac connected to the sander to contain some dust. Found that
using a scraper was a good way to go. The paint would come off in flakes
    that I could shop-vac away.

Rustoleom does have a strong smell. I used in the v-berth as well. It
appears to create a thicker, quasi-plastic, finish that seems to
encapsulate the underlying material. Will be interesting to see what that
means when it comes time to touch-up or redo the finish. Still have the
head/hanging locker and salon to do, as well as all the cockpit lockers.
