After some fiddling I have arranged my topping lift so that when I release it it stays attached but is slack enough to not interfere with the trim of the sail. The arrangement includes a bungee that keeps the slack out of the system so that the topping lift is not flopping about in the wind and waves. The topping lift remains attached so that I can lift the back of the boom when reefing my main which makes it much, much easier to slab reef the leach of the sail to the boom. I replaced the SS topping lift shackle at the boom attachment with an Amsteel soft shackle which doesn't clank and rattle about like the steel shackle did. Daniel SwordsSolitude # 525
