This is very helpful. I like the idea of not drilling any more holes, so the loop of line sounds like a good idea. How much purchase is needed on the down haul? I'm assuming it would never need a winch, right?

Jon,
Have seen the downhaul rigged in a few different ways on various boats.
The particular method does not seem to matter very much provided that it works for you.
The two ways that I am most familiar with are
* a single block connected via a swivel to a u-bolt installed in the foredeck on centerline somewhere aft the two mooring cleats, and
* a single block connected via a loop of line that passes around the aft foot of each of the two mooring cleats.
In both cases the downhaul connects to the bridle on the bottom side of the spinnaker pole via a snap shackle with a swivel.
The line passes from the bridle through the block and back to a jam cleat near the cockpit. Have seen the jam cleat on the side of the cabin and on the top.
The idea of using a piece of line might sound a bit, "what?", but it works well and is easily tried out without drilling any holes.
It works well enough that TC Williams has compiled an enviable record of winning races in the Annapolis area.
Have worked foredeck for TC for a number of years, so I've used this bit of gear for a while ;)

I've had Nimble for over 10 years now, and I've decided to give Wednesday night races a try. My problem is the spinnaker. I have a pole and topping lift, but I don't have a down haul. Can anyone tell me how that is rigged?
Thanks,
