As John Boor mentioned about battery ages - don't mix them.
I would either work with the one that I have until it needs replacing and then buy two to increase bank size or replace the house bank now with two new batteries. Depends on needs and budget of course.

My present batteries are approximately 2 years old. So if I add a second house battery and alternate the two as you mention, do I then need to add a second battery selection switch?
