[Public-List] Looking for navigation advice - Hampton Roads & ICW

Having done this a few times, it isn't bad. I usually stay on the "Red
Side" till Portsmouth. As Michael said have 13 on the radio and keep
your eyes open. The bridge schedules are published and easy to work
   with. https://cruisersnet.net/category/bridges-va-to-nc-line/
I personally prefer the Dismal Swamp route as it is more peaceful.
Spend the night at the Visitor's Center and another in Elizabeth City.
For Elizabeth City I like Jennette Brothers free dock over the city
dock. Either way entering the Alligator River rely on your eyeballs
   not the GPS.
   A good and fun trip.

So it looks like I will be moving a boat from near Buckroe Beach in
Hampton, Va. down the ICW to Oriental, N. C.? I am very familiar with
the second half of the trip, but the whole Hampton
Roads/Norfolk/Portsmith area looks pretty scary on the chart. Does
anyone have any experience or advice for transiting that area?? Or can
anyone point me to information online or in print that they found helpful?

Thanks.

David,
I have not done this trip but I was recently watching a video from James Baldwin
from Brunswick, GA who owns Cruising Yacht Services and refurbishes old plastic
classics like ours. He is a twice world circumnavigator and he brought an A30 d
own to Brunswick from Maryland. Parts of the video are taken in your area of con
cern.
Here is the link: Alberg 30 Shakedown Passage <http://www.atomvoyages.com/gall
ery/video-gallery/383-alberg-30-shakedown.html>

Take care,
Marcelo

Not sure why it looks scary to you. Monitor VHF ch.13 for bridges, lock,
and any commercial traffic you may meet. One or two of the bridges open
only at specific intervals.
