Hello Jonathan - 

A friend of mine had an Irish-built wooden yacht launched in the early ’50’s.   She had a proper ‘spurling pipe’ of heavy copper running diagonally down from beneath her anchor windlass back down to the heel of her mast.  Her anchor chain was carried there… deep down in her and amidships both fore and aft and athwartships.
