I am having good success with my sheet to tiller self steering set-up day sailing on Lake Pontchartrain. It steers to apparent wind direction rather than trying to maintain a compass course, costs literally nothing as it only requires two dinghy blocks, some spare 3/16” line and a few 8” bungees from West Marine (great bungees and very strong and long lasting BTW). More finicky to set-up than a wind vane I suppose but why not use the power and trim of the sails to steer the boat? And it is so nice while single handed daysailing to be able to move freely about the boat, a totally different experience, I don’t know how I lived without it.

?? After listening to Yves Gelinas talk about his voyage last week, and
reading his book,? I decided to Google his web site and see what the
price was for the self-steerer unit. $3,600 plus a few accessories and,
maybe, $1,000 to install it, at a guess. If I were sailing around the
world single-handed, I'd buy one, but for the Chesapeake Bay I'll stick
to my auto-pilot. Even if we were able to cruise to Block Island, across
some of the most heavily-traveled shipping lanes in the world,? I don't
think it would be safe to go to sleep and let the boat self-steer.
