Hi Scotch,
I just ordered a new mainsail from LeeSails. I ordered mine with a foot shelf and 1/2 inch slugs. I don't race either. I feel the foot shelf provides more support to the sail especially with high winds and you don't get any of the flogging along the foot that you sometimes see with the loose footed mains. Of course, everything is a compromise so you are giving up some adjustability and adding more hardware to the main. I don't like the bolt rope along the foot as I feel there is more chafing of the sail since it rests on the edge of the slot in the boom. Some folks like the loose footed mains when reefed since the reef points are tied around the sail rather than around the boom. The hardcore cruisers like the foot shelf better since it allows rainwater collection. Its all a matter of personal preference.
