Marcelo,
The best prop for the A30 with a 1:1 direct drive Atomic 4 is: http://www.atomic4.com/propeller.html
They are hugely popular. With this prop, it's like a different boat. Maneuvering (creeping slowly in/out of a slip or other constrained situation) is vastly improved, as is prop walk. The prop should enable the engine should cruise at the midpoint of its torque curve (2000 rpm for the A4). Atomic 4 installations on heavier boats achieve this using a 2:1 reduction gear. However, the A30s (and many similar boats of that era) came with 1:1 transmissions which were less expensive. The 1:1 setup is fine; however, the choice of prop is more important without the reduction gear. There is little sense in carrying the weight of a 30 hp engine and then choosing a prop that will only enable it to develop 10 hp. The fuel consumption of the Atomic 4 at 2000 rpm is typically 1 gal/hr.
My $0.02 in the "for what it's worth department".
Cheers,
Matt

I was always partial to the ammeter on the original A4. Showing actual loads and charge rates was reassuring-pegged ammeter, look for a short etc.
More complicated wiring though, a shunt being needed through which actual current flowed. Simpler (read cheaper) is why new vehicles have voltmeters.
My "57 Chevy pickup had an ammeter. Of course, it also had the starter motor button mounted on the floorboard-no starter solenoid. Technology marches on...

Even though the alternator may be rated for 30 Amp output, you won't see it approach rated output unless it is connected to a load in the neighborhood of 360-420 W. Ohm's Law and all that. The regulated voltage is approximately 13.8 V. In other words you're going to need a load of known quantity to get accurate max output readings.

Gordon,
So if I understand your statement correctly, you are a fan of the 2 blade 13 X 8 original prop? This is what I presently have also but at times I have considered a smaller 3 blade prop to prevent ?lugging? and low RPMs.

That will hurt in bad weather. Also, if the engine is in tune and alignment, then it will be smooth and quiet at all speeds.
