[Public-List] Mainsail

Well, I wrote a bit more than some folks might read.
The "short short" might be "buy a Velcro strap. Bend on the main using the
tack and clew rings only along the foot. Run the Velcro strap through the
clew ring and around the boom a couple times. Go sailing! Does it
perform better for you or not?" More ramblings below.

Jonathan

Attached foot:

   - the "ways sails have always been made".
   - Attaching the foot of the sail to the boom forces the lower/lowest
portion of the main to transition from a natural airfoil shape higher up
the sail to a straight shape along the boom. All of the portion of the
sail involved in making the transition has a less than desirable shape.
   This means lost power.
   - Possible that the bolt rope along the foot adds strength to the main.
   - Am fairly certain, if not certain, that the bolt rope minimizes any
stretching of the fabric in the foot of the main. If the fabric is
stretching a bit higher up, not stretching to the point of damage or
deformation, then the lack of stretch in the foot means that the transition
must resolve a larger range of shape change. Presumably the sailmaker
adjusts the way the sail is cut to ease the transition at the designed wind
   velocity.
   - The bolt rope may take up some of the forces exerted on the sail by
   the wind.
   - Conforms to the class rules as listed in the handbook of the Alberg 30
   Association of the Chesapeake Bay.

Loose foot:

   - Allows the entire main to take on a natural airfoil shape.
   - Concentrates the force of the wind on the clew and the tack. Have
heard that the clew is highly stressed to being with. The lack of an
attached foot can only increase the stresses. Some number (many? all?) of
loose foot mains are provided with a Velcro strap that goes through the
clew ring and around the boom. Expect that the Velcro reduces the stress
on the webbing and stitching used to attach the clew slide to the clew
   ring.
   - Does not conform to the class rules as listed in the handbook of the
Alberg 30 Association of the Chesapeake Bay.

Shelf foot:

   - Allows the main to take on the airfoil shape for which the shelf is
cut. Any other shape, draft forward or draft aft, would require a
transition area from the shape cut into the shelf to the shape formed by
   the main.
   - Stresses may be distributed along the shelf....don't know.
   - As the outhaul is tensioned the shelf collapses allowing some
variation in the airfoil shape of the lower/est portion of the main.
   - Conforms to the class rules as listed in the handbook of the Alberg 30
   Association of the Chesapeake Bay.
