We attended a Windjammer lecture given by the co-pilot of that
helicopter. All except the pilot jumped prior to the helicopter
crashing, while the pilot held it in position in impossible conditions.
The waves were 70 feet, he said, and you couldn't see them. One moment
you were 10 feet above the water and the next you were 80. He broke
protocol and put on his night vision goggles to time his jump. He
suspects that the diver who died fell 80 feet.

After getting everyone else out, the pilot didn't have flying time left
to save himself.
