[Public-List] Sailing Dinghy

Hello Chris -

I’m not close enough to let you try ours out, but can recommend we are quite fond of our sailing dinghy, which is an old Boston Whaler Squall. These were built between the mid 1960’s and mid 1980’s.

They have an integral centreboard, are self bailing even with one person aboard, row very well, and sail acceptably. Actually since we replaced the Sunfish rig that they were originally supplied with and replaced that with an Optimist sail and rig, the boat sails a lot better and the spars are shorter. The dinghy will handle four without stress, two or three are easy. It is unsinkable, and I can sit on the gunnel without worrying about capsizing it. It’s solid enough that it can be rowed to windward in wind and waves - which we’ve had to do carrying anchors out when aground once or twice.

On the negative side, at 10’ and being a Boston Whaler, the dinghy is heavy… but that got better when I took it in hand and carved out the soggy foam from between the hulls. It’s better now, but I couldn’t call it a light dinghy.

I’ll send you pictures if you like...
