Folks should note that metal hatches often get too hot for bare feet. So one must include a teak cockpit grating to avoid complaints from the rest of the family who are typically unconcerned with engine access. Secondly, the primary access problem on the A30 is to the propeller and rudder shaft stuffing boxes rather than to the engine itself. Hence, one should consider that in positioning the hatch.

Darcy,
I am planning to install a hatch. This will be a hatch mfg. to be absolutely water tight. To help keep it that way I plan to use grating over the hatch supported outside the dimensions of the hatch so feet/weight are not directly bearing down on the hatch. Continued foot action on the hatch will make the caulking seal fail sooner than later.

I installed the 15x24 Freeman from Fisheries:

Here's some pics of the install. I cut out the hole with a hacksaw blade wrapped in duct tape while swinging on the hook (that saw hangin' there was a fail, couldn't make the radius). Took about 30 mins of cursing, but ain't that bad.
