The problem is that, by not taking the time to manually delete what is no longer relevant, you are making sure that people reading the new posts will have to take the time to sift through mounds of useless material before they get to what is sometimes a one-line reply. 

I think that manually deleting some of the contents being replied to is better than having that deletion being handled automatically or by the sysadmin. The people replying have control over what they wish to see included in their reply and what they wish to see deleted.
