Two stories about why I hate furlers so much (pics attached):

Story 1: Cook Strait
At around 0800 we sail out of Nelson (NZ). Beautiful skies. By around
midnight we enter the Cook Strait.

The wind picks up to Force 7 and we reef everything down. By around 1am we
are passing two rocks known as "the brothers". The conditions have picked
up to Force 10. 60kt gusts, very steep waves to about 7m, confused seas,
patches of rain.

Two killer whales make an appearance near one of the brothers rocks.
"Perched" on a reef, they are calm in a way that strikes me surreal.

Just past the brothers headed SSW, the loudest bang I'd ever heard shook
the boat. I don't mean hyperbole; the boat shook and trembled with the blow.

The was followed by what sounded like a gun battle. The furler retrieval
line had failed, and the full 30m tall genoa had instantly unfurled. When
that sail filled, the 20mm dyneema jib sheet had snapped.

The genoa was flogging itself to death in the storm, with about 5m of sheet
whipping the port side of the hull.

The Captain had us bear off, and he proceeded to do what I to this day do
not understand: he went calmly up to the foredeck, grabbed the retrieval
line, sat down, and pulled the sail in.

Adrenaline? I don't know, but I can't fathom having the strength. Let alone
the agility to navigate the foredeck in those conditions.

We turned the boat around and sailed through the night back to Nelson and
were back in port by around 11am.

Story 2: NYC

I'm solo in my Nordica 20 in the Lower Bay just off Breezy Point. I have
the genoa "reefed" in anticipation of building conditions (hence the name
"Breezy Point").

Sure enough, conditions start to build. As the wind picks up, the retrieval
line windings start to "compress" and the sail starts easing out. The more
it eases, the tighter the drum winds itself.

The boat is new to me, and the PO had a retrieval line that stretches. I
hadn't noticed! Within seconds the sail was flying at 100%. I winch down on
the retrieval line, but it's jammed.

The surf is building along with the wind. I'm starting to get beat on, and
I'm in danger of losing seaway and grounding.

I move up to the foredeck and try to get the sail in by hand. No dice. On
the way back to the cockpit, I get careless and lose my grip. For a moment,
I am free falling in space.

I think to myself, "damn, it's gonna be a cold swim!" when I feel something
sharp catch me between the shoulder blades and push me back on the deck.
Like the hand of God himself. I hit a shroud, and just right. No swim.

Then a BANG! and I look forward to the thing that terrfies all sailors: a
failed forestay.

Well I fought and struggled and managed to get the boat back to Liberty
Landing some hours later. The rig stayed up, mostly because I was able to
sail downwind headed back under main.

The flogging genoa had caused the drum to separate from the sleeve and it
had chaffed the forestay to failure.
