I think we should be friends lol. I am single handing all the time and am scared, or more really hesitant to go out in heavy weather. You’re comment here was helpful

I find that when the wind gets up to about 18 - 20 mph (Force 5) I can furle up a maximum of 18” so that the foot is now 14 ft long (approximately a 120 Genoa). At that amount of reefing to me the sail still looks good and flat and the boat still points well (especially since the leach can now be trimmed inside the spreaders). If I furle any more than that the sail starts to immediately lose its shape and I am embarrassed to be seen sailing with it. Going from a 135 Genoa to a 120 Genoa doesn’t make a lot of difference but it is a convenient first reef, makes single handed taking slightly easier, and does relieve a little strain on the rig. My next reef if the wind continues to increase is one reef in the main. My boat is very well balanced with this reefing. My third reef is more drastic, I find that if I furle the Genoa until only 7 ft of the foot is exposed it again becomes flat and trims well. This is slightly smaller then a storm jib. You may think “What is the point?” But I find that even this very small bit of jib improves my boats sailing with either a single or double reefed main. Since I don’t race and I sail a lot in heavy winds and always single-handed I think my next Genoa will be a 120 which I suspect I would be able to furle about 10% (to about the size of a 100 Jib) and still have it set nicely.
