Fortunately ‘McHale’s Navy’ as a TV show is long dead…

But… I had a good friend in the RCN, sadly no longer with us, who served aboard HMCS MARGAREE as one of her officers when she visited Saigon during the height of the Viet Nam War era. He didn’t see zones where fighting was happening, but did comment several times during the years I knew him that Saigon in the mid 1960’s “was like a gold rush boom town… Gordy you’d never have known they were there to fight a war”.

I realize clearly that observation is unfair to the majority of US servicemen who took their jobs seriously, hundreds of thousands who suffered terribly and also died… but perhaps there was a bit of McHale’s Navy going on.

I would agree with you that it’s offensive to highlight that part!
