On my boat, I have a T-Track mounted along the SB side of the boom. Mounted on the track are 3 Garhauer reefing cheek blocks with a small deadeye on the bottom of each one. The reefing lines originate at the deadeyes pass under the boom, through the leech cringles, back down to the blocks and then forward to a large 8 inch cleat near the forward end of the boom. I usually daysail with my first and second reef lines in place regardless of the weather. If cruising, I’ll have all 3 ready to go. There are also 2 padeyes along the boom to keep the lines from sagging when not in use. The large single cleat can accommodate all 3 lines.
Today, it was blowing 15-20k when we went out. I had my second reef on right from the start together with the 150%. We sailed along nicely with about 20 degree heel doing 5 1/2 to 6 k.

Since I reef at the mast I can’t help much with part of your question but: I run my leech reefing lines from the boom, up to a small dinghy block attached to the clew with a dyneema soft shackle, back down through a cheek block on the boom and then along the boom to a clam cleat on the boom near the mast (I sail singlehanded and have to go to the mast to pull down the sail to the tack reefing cringle anyway). The dinghy block on the clew stays on the same side of the sail as the cheek block so the bunt of the sail does not get pinched as I pull in the reefing line. I have no problems with chafe. For me this has made reefing and shaking out the reef much, much easier by eliminating a lot of friction. I also replaced my reefing hook with a snap shackle so I have no concern that the tack cringle will slip off the hook just as I go to retention the halyard. Daniel SwordsSolitude, #525

You have to be up there anyway to put the tack ring on the hook? so why not combine the operations? The tack has to go on first, the the halyard tension is restored, the the clew is pulled down.

The imagine that you?ve pulled down your reef? then you tack. Because the geometry of the situation at the gooseneck changes, your reef will either slack off or tension up. The later could easily tear the main if you?ve given that winch a 1/4 turn too much?
