Thanks

Thanks for the replies everyone! 5200 it is.

There is a mention of though bolting the cutless bearing housing on the A30
site.

http://www.alberg30.org/maintenance/MechanicalPropulsion/CutlessBearing/Thru
bolted/

This seems like the most secure method, I'm assuming the bolts clear the
"shelf" below the stuffing box? Anyone know what size bolts they used? My
boat is 2 hours away or I would measure myself.

Thanks,
Andrew

Yes, I tend to publish every alternative approach that doesn't seem
dangerous. Having now worked on my own, I would not want to through-bolt.
It's very difficult to access back there, and I've pulled the cutless
bearing housing off several times over the years.

I don't think the danger is what Rick feared. The water pressure is on the
outside of the boat, pushing the cutless bearing housing onto it, not away.
He mentions lag bolts, but on my boat they were machine bolts.
In any event, if this was such a tenuous construction, then I probably would
have heard about problems.

Andrew,

"the whole bearing housing and stern tube assembly came out as one piece."

Been noodling on this and "how did Whitby align the engine in a production
facility".
Wondering if they installed the engine, and the installed the stern tube,
cutless bearing,
and housing as one piece, into an oversize hole that was closed up as
needed. The
bearing would "self-align" if not forced out of alignment by the sides of
the hole.

Have not done this myself, so there is some (more than "some"?) speculation
here.

Thoughts anyone?

Jonathan
