Mike.. If my hearsay memory is right, Whitby made all the keels from iron after the first one or two, for cost reasons. Carl Alberg then had to make a couple of minor design changes to compensate for the weight loss. Isobar from the '60s had iron ballast.

The older boats had lead ballast. I believe it was the late 60s or early
70s when Whitby switched the iron, due to health concerns for employees
with lead poisoning.  If you have a boat with iron ballast, using a magnet
works to find the top of the ballast.
