Where my chain plates went thru the deck there were small pads built-up of
fiberglass. Over the years due to chain plates flexing the opening got
bigger and the pads started to chip away. I first used boatlife caulk to
fill gaps but didn't last and I was getting water intrusion. I decided to
rebuild the pads using west g-flex epoxy and mat and cloth. I built them up
around the chain plates shaped and sanded them then painted with 2part
paint. Been two years and no leaks. Now I know what you are thinking, yes I
did glass the chain plates in but the flexibility of the g flex epoxy
allows for the movement of the chain plates when under load. I did remove
and inspect them first plus I installed new hexhead bolts to the glassed in
knees and bulkhead attachment points. Should I need to ever replace a chain
plates I will use a chisel and hammer to loosen them up.
