[Public-List] Rudder blade paintings and coatings

Hi George,

Thanks for pointing me to the rudder maintenance page. The variant on my boat is the first one described as far as I can tell. So far there don’t seem to be any problems with the wood, that’s what puzzles me about the amount and thickness of the fiberglass and epoxy coating. Perhaps it was over cautious application of material. I believe this boat made some offshore passages in the 80s so it might have been beefed up for that reason. I’ll remove more of the fiberglass this weekend weather permitting and do a better assessment..

However, there is a thick coating of coarse FG cloth and resin on the blade that is cracked and peeling. The rudder seems to be undamaged. I’m in the process of scraping and sanding the old coating/finish, but I need advice as to how the rudder should be refinished. Should I put up a layer of FB cloth and epoxy, coat with barrier paint, and then anti fouling? Is the FB and resin necessary?
