[Public-List] stern tube question

I am going to embark on the same project in a month or so. I have seen the instructions regarding the cutlass bearing on the maintenance page, but was wondering if there are any other snags you or others ran into. I don't think there is much of a bearing left in my case: it was way too easy to align the engine with the shaft, suggesting to me that the shaft has a lot of play.
I need to haul the boat for this (and will paint the bottom, of course) so I hope to do this as quickly as possible to get the boat out of the yard again.
