Jeff -- It should be sufficient to run your engine once per month if you're not using the boat. If your battery won't hold a charge for a month, then there is something wrong. Only boats with refrigeration need to stay plugged in all of the time. That said, if you google "solar battery trickle charger" you will find a family of products for less than $50 that you can just leave in the cockpit when you're not on the boat.

My slip has lost it's electrical power for reasons related to Navy regulations, so I need to charge batteries. Who has added solar panels to their A-30 and what were the pluses and minuses?

Jeff... Not to worry. Isobar (181) swung at a mooring (NAVSTA Annapolis) all the years I had her, so no shore power. I never used much electricity underway so the batteries never got too low. I used a cheap solar cell, not much larger than a tablet. Before I left the boat I put it on top of the companionway slide and ran its wire to alligator clips at the house battery. Always kept the charge up. I used a mechanical, wave generated, bilge pump at the mooring so no electric use there. (It was/is an exposed bumpy mooring field, so plenty of piston action.)? Bob

If you go to pbase.com there is a well written article on how to mount a small solar panel on the stern pulpit.
Take care,

Eric,
>From my experience with this, the track and mast amount to a thickness of 3/16?. Therefore, if you can, select a length of rivet appropriate for this thickness. Too long and it will never tighten down. Too short and it won?t expand correctly on the inside of the mast.

Bob
