[Public-List] Cockpit hatches

In case you missed it, there was some discussion of inspection hatches on the list last summer. I've included some of it below. If you search the archives, you'll probably find a lot more.

In my own case, I was fortunate enough to buy an A30 with a Bomar hatch already installed in the cockpit floor. It's heavy duty aluminum and very sturdy with two robust latches. Whoever installed it placed it well to give good access to both the stuffing box and the rear of the engine. I don't know the dimensions offhand but it is almost as wide as the cockpit floor. I'd urge you to get the biggest one that will fit in the cockpit floor. You want one you can get your shoulders through.

So one must include a teak cockpit grating to avoid complaints from the rest of the family who are typically unconcerned with engine access. Secondly, the primary access problem on the A30 is to the propeller and rudder shaft stuffing boxes rather than to the engine itself. Hence, one should consider that in positioning the hatch.

Continued foot action on the hatch will make the caulking seal fail sooner than later.
