[Public-List] Shaft Seal / Stuffing box

I figured I would post a followup to the stuffing box question.. that
turned into a discussion on deck hatches :P
The 7/8" prop shaft with a 1-3/8" stern tube seems to be a odd combination.
It appears no conventional stuffing boxes are available with our shaft
size and stern tube combination. I called Buck Algonquin to inquire if the
1- 3/4 model could be modified to accommodate a 1-3/8 tube, but there is
not enough material in the casting. Some sort of 1-3/4 to 1-3/8 reducer
would need to be fabricated and they did not like the idea of sleaving the
1-7/4 id hose with another to reduce it down to 1-3/8 od.
The only option it seems is the PSS drip less shaft seal. Which uses a
carbon flange pushing against a stainless ring (like my existing lasdrop
seal). PN 02-078-144 which goes for around $225 online.The applications
engineer said due to our cutlass bearing in the stern tube it may require
water injection to provide adequate cooling. The general consensus online
is that folks either hate this thing and it will sink your boat with out
warning while you sleep or it is the best thing ever invented.
