I've used an off-the-shelf bimini and haven't had any trouble with 
sailing it. The only time it's in the way is when tacking or gybing, so 
I help it around by hand. I've only used it in the summertime, when the 
wind is generally light on the Chesapeake.

I mount it backwards, and can unclip the back stays on it and fold it 
forward where it rests on the back edge of the dodger. If I needed to do 
a lot of tacking, that's what I would do.
