Andrew -- It is much better to go with aluminum spreaders and new brackets. The original stika spruce spreaders require annual maintenance. Although this doesn't require taking the mast down, keeping up with varnishing or painting them is very inconvenient.

I had a rigger retrofit new spreaders and brackets. Coat around $125 a couple of years ago.

Hello Andrew -

Surprise has wooden spreaders? they are immensely strong provided they?re looked after. The originals were white oak set into substantial aluminium box section sockets? 45 years on one of them rotted inside the socket.

For the repair I made a new pair of solid white oak, and discarded the sockets were are an unnecessary complication and of course bound to develop rot inside.

I armoured the inboard ends only with epoxy and cloth, then drilled oversized holes for the four mounting bolts. I filled the holes with epoxy mixed with fibre. I then drilled correctly sized holes (3/8? I think) down the centres, the result being mounting holes completely armoured with epoxy/fibre sleeves. There is nowhere water can get into the end grain of the wood.

I varnished the spreaders, but painted the inner 6? where the epoxy/cloth was. Why varnish? So that I could see what was happening with regard to the integrity of the wood. Why paint on the inner ends? To provide an absolutely UV proof coating to protect the epoxy. Why not put epoxy over the whole spreader? Because that needlessly complicates the varnish job without adding anything to the integrity of the finish.

Many classic yachts have white paint on the upper surfaces of their spreaders? nobody can see that part so why not? I will do that some day, but for now they?re varnished all around.

Cheers?

Gordon Laco

I have round aluminum spreaders on mine. Here on the Gulf coast with the boat in the water year round and exposed to high heat and humidity, I rather the aluminum. On my previous boat, a Pearson Vanguard, we broke a wooden spreader out on the Gulf in a squall and had to limp back home. I don?t blame the wooden spreader but myself for not inspecting it more regularly but replaced it with an aluminum one anyway.
