Eric,

You can see the location of the engine exhaust thruhull on Constance, #262,
at
http://bresler.org/Sailing/Logs/Photos/Hull/20160324-Repainted_Hull_Transom.jpg

On Constance, the engine thruhulls, both raw water intake and exhaust, are
closed whenever the boat is left unattended,
and the engine key is hung on the handle of the raw water intake valve.
The diesel fuel valve is closed at the same time.
Fetching the key, reminds me to open the raw water intake, the exhaust,
and the diesel shutdoff valves.
Two advantages are: the boat cannot take on water through closed thruhulls,
and the thruhulls are turned regularly so that they cannot seize.

At sea, you might close the engine exhaust valve and hang the key on its
handle. Closing the valve would prevent
water from entering via the engine exhaust.

The engine exhaust valve was a gate valve (original?) with a Groco 1-1/4"
ball valve
