As a note, by making my own electric motor (they're actually
comparatively simple -- though use of a milling machine and drill press
are kinda necessary for some fabrication operations), I kept my
conversion costs down around C$3k (including the batteries, the actual
motor, the controller, the cables and switches, shafting, bearings,
belts, pulleys, and other hardware).

I wrote up the project as a series of blog posts (the 4th post on
connecting the existing A4 engine controls to the electric motor's
control system, hasn't been written yet, as I've still been fiddling
around with that bit), which you can find at:

...though after seeing these RPM numbers, I'm now wondering whether I
should adjust my pulley sizes a little...
