I stand corrected. I was interested in the mechanics of why this is so, 
and went down the rabbit hole of service advisories, got this:

Allowed position of the lever while sailing without running engine:
SD20, SD31 dog clutch model:
Neutral position only

SD25 dog clutch model:
If your boat is equipped with a fixed propeller, keep the control handle 
in reverse position. Fixed propeller use is only allowed if the sailing 
speed stays under 10 knots

SD40, SD50 SD50-4T cone clutch model:
Neutral position only

SD60 multi disk clutch model:
In neutral position or in reverse position


So, reading between the lines, it looks like the issue is not bearings, 
gears, or seals, but clutch wear.

The shop manual I have lists the 2QM 15 clutch as a wet type multi-disc, 
so there is almost an answer there, in my case.
