I have a Yanmar 3YM20 with the original Atomic 4 two blade propeller. The PO had switched to a three blade propeller but I hated it so much that I paid to have the boat hauled out just to replace the three blade propeller with the original two blade. The three blade spun continuously even at very low sailing speeds if left in neutral as Yanmar recommends (the spinning was noisy and caused the tiller to shake), and if left in gear it would be nearly impossible to shift back into neutral to start the engine if the boat had any forward momentum at all. The two blade seems to park itself behind the keel (at least I never notice it spinning) and I am very pleased with the performance.

I have recently acquired a diesel to replace my atomic 4 and I am curious
about the various propeller sizes being used with diesels in Alberg 30s. I
am keen to hear feedback on propeller performance from those of you using 2
blade propellers with a diesel. Along with your impressions of performance,
It would be useful to know what engine you have, (maker and HP) and the
pitch and diameter of your two blade propellers. There is a lot of help on
line sizing propellers but nothing beats direct feedback on performance.
Another concern with this repower is the fuel return. Since the existing
engine is gas powered, there is currently no return. Nor is there any
additional fixture on the tank to accommodate one. I was thinking it might
work well to "T" it on the vent line nearest where it exits the tank. As a
footnote, the vent opening is quite high inside the nearest stanchion.

Our return is "T" ed into the vent line at the tank with no issues.
We have a fixed 3 blade 12X10 DJ355 Michigan Wheel prop. Freshly rebuilt
18hp Westerbeke with a 2.05 ratio.
On flat water max speed is 6.4 kts at 3200rpm (engine is governed to 3400).
Typical cruise is 5.5 kts at 2500 we average around 1/2 gal per hour.
Overall we are happy with the setup, I could probably go with a little more
pitch and drop the RPMs at cruise a bit, but I would lose the extra power
on the top end.

Checkmate has a 15 hp. diesel with 2:1 reduction gear. Swinging a 13 X 12
2 blade, it all seems well matched. I don't have a tach, it seems like a
fast idle drives the boat about 5 1/4 knots. Full ahead in calm water gives
over 7 kts. but engine definately laboring at that power. Black exhaust and
water discharge gets hot quickly.
