[Public-List] Public-List Digest, Vol 4101, Issue 1

We had play at the rudder head where the tiller attached to the shaft via the hinged bronze fitting on our 33’ Mico

The fitting had become worn and loose so in the absence of knowing where to find a replacement we had the inside built up again with bronze solder and remachined it.

It went back just fine but then I realised I also had some slop just below deck where the shaft cap went over the main shaft. The hole for the bolt running through both had elongated.

Ended up removing the bolt and redrilling the hole to the next size up and then inserting a larger bolt.

Problem solved.

All of that was done in the water.

I later recall seeing a post where a company in the US still manufactured those bronze fittings but that was a good while ago. We’ve since moved from the 33 to a 52 CSY Ketch and last year turned to the dark side and purchased a Catamaran.

On our first sail was in some strong winds and big seas and I was at the bow when I heard my wife screaming.

Rushed back to the cockpit and she was standing there pointing to a full champagne glass on the saloon table.

‘It’s not moving!…it’s not moving!!!’

After a lifetime of monohull sailing in the Pacific, South China Sea and around Australia, I don’t think we’ll be moving back to the ‘lean’ anytime soon. LMAO

Mind you, Mico was always our favourite when it came to dinner flying across the cabin and dribbling down the bulkhead wall!

Fair winds,

Ladybird (nee Mico)
