I wouldn't worry about replacing the spacer with any special materials. You can use wood - oak or teak, for instance. The original lasted this long, so a wood replacement is good for another half-century.

Gord has given you good advice. Originally on some boats, mine included, the spacer underneath the track was wood. This deteriorates over time so in replacing the spacer use something like star board or some hard plastic which won't compress, but also won't rot.
