You can only put in a backing plate when the mast is down, and
even then it's a bit fiddly. You drill and tap the holes on the backing
plate lining up the holes with the track. Then one person holds
the backing plate stuck to a stick up the foot of the mast while
the other hunts around until the holes line up.

On my mast, I didn't do it myself, it was done by professional riggers. They
charged me 1.5 hours labor. To put that in context, they only charged
charged for 15 minutes to take the mast down.

By all means use a sealant, like Tef gel, between the stainless steel screws
and the aluminum.
