Hi Gordon,    Thanks for asking. I did well. At its highest (about 0330) the water was just over the top of the boat box in this picture (oops, picture may not post, I estimate a 6 ft surge here). Had it risen another foot above that I would have had a serious problem with line length and placement so I am remaking and rethinking my hurricane spring lines. If (when?) it rises say 2 or 3 ft above that, survival of any boats in this bayou will be left more to happenstance than preparation.     The Lakefront and this marina now flood whenever we have consistently strong south or south east winds, which is several times each year, so the area has adjusted pretty much to this level of flooding. The only reason my boat still exists is because Mandeville was on the west side of Hurricane Katrina so the storm surge was on the south shore (New Orleans).

Gerard,

I find it very difficult to determine the location of a leak with the
boat out of the water. Get a good flashlight and take as close a look as
you can. Look for wet spots and then look above them. Be patient.

In my case, I had failed to completely caulk the upper bolt holding the
cutless bearing housing. I saw a water droplet on the end of that bolt.

Sometimes I've used my phone to take videos of things I couldn't see
otherwise.

When you've found the general location, clean it as well as you can and
wrap a paper towel around it. See where the damp spot is.

Thank you again for all the very helpful replies to this topic. I managed to schedule a haul-out for Wednesday, which was a bit of a challenge as boat yards have been closed earlier and many don't allow DIY.
As I am getting ready for the haul out, I am wondering how to approach this. First, I need to figure out the source of the leak. Can I inspect the stern tube without taking it out?
If the stern tube is fine how do I go about the repair? Clean everything as best as possible? Then pump a ton of 4200 in the the area between the stern tube and the surrounding deadwood? It seems that there is some rubber seal. Should I worry about that?
Would it be best to take out the stern tube anyway? It seems Mike got a solid approach to removing it, but again I would rather leave it in unless absolutely necessary.

Thanks for the info, James.  I'll put Pettit on the short list.

Been one season since the repair

Seems improbable to hand fill and sand the moonscape.  Thank you for your

Tim Lacky is a good man. Good advice, good techniques, excellent
documentation. I don't know how one man can get that much done.

Get the g10 tube that has the id that is the same as the cutlass bearing
od. Leave enough of the tube exposed beyond the stern post for a pair of
set screws to capture the cutlass bearing. I set the new tube in thickened
West System. You'll need to have a thoroughly clean shaft alley for the
glue bond.
