[Public-List] Hull Painting

Mike,
Last spring I painted Quest with Awlgrip in the same Navy Blue that the prior owner had done over 20 years ago. I followed a very thorough DIY article that I had saved from from Good Old Boat from November 2010. The results were indistinguishable from a spray job at anything more than about two feet away. I had to fill some minor gouges and heavily sand some areas where a clear coat topcoat had failed but otherwise it was not very a very physical effort for a retired 66 year old. I did most of the work by myself with my wife assisting only when I needed someone to monitor and add thinner to the paint tray for the 30-45 minutes or so it took to apply each coat coat to the hull.

There is however one big caveat to following this DIY method, uninterrupted days for the actual painting. Collectively it took me about 40 hours of work over 10 days however six of those days consisted of only wiping down the hull, preparing each of the two coats of primer and four of paint and the 30-45 minutes it took to apply them. If you re-coat the paint within an 18-24 hour window it does not require re-sanding the hull between coats. I would be happy to share my source materials and experience off line if you’re interested. I too agonized over having it done professionally but decided to take it on once I retired and had the luxury of time. The job was easier and the results better than I had anticipated.

It's nicely shiny, less complex application, and touching up is simple, if it comes to that. Brushing liquid made it flow out, it looks sprayed.
