Hello John,
No, paint will not stay on, and will not protect your propellor. You need to affix a zinc anode to the shaft (or the rudder or deadwood as near to the prop as you can manage). That is the only effective protection.
Any marine store will have a collection of zincs in tear drop or shaft mount configurations… They’re cheap and effective
