Oh if only I could figure out how to provide a picture. One picture would be worth thousands of my words. Serendipitous for me that the previous owner left aboard several stainless steel “heavy duty, swivel jaw, snap shackles” as might be used for a sail halyard, and one of these happened to be a good fit for the gooseneck. To fit the gooseneck the jaw opening width has to be a minimum width of 1.9 cm (0.75 in), a few cm larger is OK. This,I think, is the significant dimension which will allow the reefing snap shackle to fit on the gooseneck in conjunction with the tack shackle. Mine fits inside the tack shackle and is secured to the gooseneck with the tack shackle clevis pin. I believe a “Suncor heavy duty jaw swivel 5” snap shackle will work but there may be cheaper alternatives. Or an even cheaper and better alternative might be to just use a stainless steel spring clip instead of an open hook.

There's also the possibility of tensioning the halyard while
there's a fold of sail around the horn, and putting a hole in
your main.

This sounds like something I want to do.
Do you have pictures? The mailing list strips attachments, so you
would have to mail a link.

Thanks,

SG
