This is for Dave, Blue Teal #284, Standing at the mast on my rocking, rolling boat with no one at the tiller while slacking the halyard, dropping the sail to the reefing cringle, pulling in the reefing leech line and holding on, I find that it is easier and places less strain on the leech of the sail if I release the halyard tension on the luff of the sail to the point that the reefing cringle would slide off the reefing horn. With the snap shackle, once the luff reefing cringle is snapped in place I can forget about tensioning the halyard to keep the cringle from sliding off of the horn and can even continue to slacken the halyard making it easier (for me) to tighten the leech reefing line. Once the leech reefing line is tight I can then focus on tightening the halyard. Anyway, it works for me, and I am too inept to use one of those “rams horns.”
