I run the lifelines outside the shrouds, and put a sort of turks head lashing fixing the lifeline to the shrouds where it crosses port and starboard.  

Each fall when the mast comes down, I simply cut the lashing.

I didn’t do this for any regs… it’s just good seamanship.
