Best engine-related purchase I ever made was a Equus 3612 compression 
tester.
They cost $30-40, they're easy to use and the will tell quickly and
definitively whether you have a compression problem. No guess work,
or putting your thumb over a sparkplug hole or whatever. I can tell
you now that although compression is lowish on all 4 cylinders of
my Atomic 4, that the pressure hasn't changed by more than a couple of 
pounds
on any of them in the last 15 years.
