Hi Taft,They can be rough and still give you all the strength. Machining them is about cosmetics. You can cut the plates from flat stock using a bandsaw or a good saber saw if you are patient. You can then clean them up with a sander and files. Stack them so they match. Round over the edges with a router and carbide round over bit. You have two basic approaches to drilling. First, stack them and drill at the same time. This is a form of match drilling. The plates match but you have to drill straight when you install them. Second, drill all the holes in one. Clamp them to the beam. Drill thru the beam and the second plate using the first as a guide. It's feels like a big job but it's really not bad.Regards,GregAyla
