A scarf joint is only an angled cut. you lay one piece of wood over the other, cut the angle through both at once, then turn one of the pieces around… presto, a perfect scarf joint.

No need for that.

Use mahogany or black locust (despite its name, it’s very blonde when varnished) Both are readily available, both very durable and easy to maintain.

You can interrupt the wooden rail where the track needs to be, but putting the track bolts through the wood is not structurally a compromise.

That is a plus, but what would you tie things to there? The lifelines are more convenient for fenders...

If you can get six coats on the first year… that’s one a day for a week, then do one coat every spring, the finish should last 10-15 years.

In my wooden boat days I liked SikaFlex… for the Alberg I like LifeCaulk, although that stuff was useless on the wooden boat.

Clean off all that remains of old bedding compound… then sand, but no need to sand aggressively as grinding would suggest. You don’t want to weaken the deck edge.

I know Kohler well… years ago when we were making the film Master and Commander, when I could get a weekend off I’d go up to San Diego and look at boats. I used to ask and receive their permission to walk on their docks… there are a lot of very nice boats there. San Diego is a very nice city. These days we supply rigging to San Diego Maritime, and also to the big USN office building being built. There is a lot of rope decoration inside it...
