Greg,
As Gord mentioned the Aluminum frames were polished aluminum. Be somewhat careful with stripping as some products are very corrosive to bare aluminum. I would not use heat, because I don't know if the original frames were dead soft or tempered. Gord would you know?
If tempered/hardened do not use heat. If dead soft then heat is OK to soften the paint.
If you sail in sweet water then repolishing them is probably the best treatment. If you would like to change the color or are sailing in salt water then see to get them anodized. Anodizing can be clear or some other color, like dark grey, bright pink, etc. This process is carefully controled to chemically convert the surface to be corrosion resistant.

What has worked for getting them striped back to bare metal?Regards,GregP.S. Alexseal has a learning curve but I'm very happy with the results. Rolled, no tip.
