Just curious, the foot of your 100% jib is only 10.5 ft and you are having weather helm? Also, with a 100% jib how are the jib sheets run without chafing almost constantly on the shrouds, outside of the shrouds are between the forward shroud and the cap shroud?

Hi all: My 2 cents.
I have found that Sirius ( hull # 222) needs the jib furled to about 40% to
maintain a balanced boat in our customary summer Southwesterlies here in
Buzzards Bay. The afternoon blows like old faithful at 15 knots from June
through August. My full 100% genoa gives an unfriendly weather helm and
leaves me trapped at the tiller as, like Daniel, I too always sail solo.
In the fall I leave a single reef in from mid-September until I haul,
usually right after Halloween. My Alberg loves the 20 to 25 knots in those
fall days with a single reef and the genoa furled up to 50%. But I never
really shake that weather helm.
Self-steering or even a break from the helm without heaving-to is a problem
I just do not know how to solve. The lines on her are too classic and
pretty for me to install a wind vane.

Interesting, Tom,
Reducing sail forward to improve balance is a very unique situation. I?ve never encountered that in any sort of vessel. Normaly reducing area in the headsail, especially rolling it up, which results in a baggy sail, makes weather helm much worse.
Strange situation there?

Good to check the amount of rake in the mast.
Last winter in replacing the running rigging on Constance,
rake was reduced from 10"-12" to 4"-5". The reduction dramatically
reduced the amount of weather helm. Sorry for the ranges, but it
seems hard for me to get a solid measurement of rake as the fore and
aft trim of the boat due to weight distribution will change the rake.
What rake do you all have in your masts?
