[Public-List] Solent stay

Hello Marcelo,
Rigging up a Solent stay that is removable is not difficult. One achieves good tension by use of a highfield lever arrangement which involves a fitting much like the pelican hook used to close lifeline gates, but much stronger of course.
The hard part is rigging up a deck pade eye to receive the lower end of the stay… but that in solved by glassing in a knee to the underside of the deck, or perhaps a short wire carrying the deck load to the stem as is done with Folkboats. Actually I’d recommend that way.
Perhaps better than a Solent stay would be arranging a wire luff in your heavy weather headsail, and it’s own block up below the masthead. When hoisted, perhaps stowed on something like the Wyckham-Martin furling gear, it would be easily deployed. You’d set it up hard with a sufficiently strong halyard winch.
For daily coastal sailing the halyard would be stowed against the mast, and the sail coiled up and stowed below. That would work like a Solent stay, but would be in place only on passages where you might need it.

I am curious how others have done this on our boats. I am thinking that it should be detachable so as to avoid having to furl the Genoa every time we tack. I am curious how far aft from the present forestay it should be and how far down from the masthead it should attach so as not to require a baby stay.
