Hello Stephen,
The lower pin at the heel of the rudder doesn’t do as much of the work as the upper bearing and the gudgeon arrangement. That latter seems to have plenty of meat in it still (the shaft the that is).
The lower pin can be cut off, drilled out and a new aluminium bronze or silicon bronze pin threaded in. The former is harder and more durable. Again, that lower pin doesn’t really do a lot of the heavy lifting with regard to the rudder’s integrity. Many traditional yachts do not have one down there at all, relying on the upper two points for secure attachment.
I don’t reckon it’s possible to deal with the upper part of the rudder shaft without rebuilding the whole rudder. It doesn’t look to me like it needs that yet.
has there been movement or rattling while sailing or particularly while motoring that you’ve noticed?
